New Housing Initiative for Vulnerable Families in Mexico

Aiming to build 48,000 functional homes, the project prioritizes single mothers and indigenous peoples in San José Chiapa. The first phase begins in February 2025, ensuring accessible housing for repatriated migrants and those in vulnerable situations.

New Housing Initiative for Vulnerable Families in Mexico

The government of the state of Puebla launched a social housing construction program aimed at repatriated migrants and vulnerable families. The initial goal is to build 48,000 houses in one year, which will be mainly distributed to single mothers, indigenous people, and those in urgent need of housing.

Javier Aquino Limón, Secretary of Welfare of Puebla, detailed that the houses will not be sold but will be given according to prioritization criteria to those who need them most. Collaboration is anticipated among federal, state, and municipal governments, with the participation of the National Housing Commission, the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development, and the Secretariat of Welfare of Puebla.

There are two modalities in this project. One is aimed at Infonavit beneficiaries and the other focuses on the construction of social housing by the three levels of government. For this purpose, municipalities have provided land for the construction of these houses, with approximately 23 municipalities interested in collaborating.

The first phase of the program is expected to start in February 2025, with San José Chiapa being the first municipality to receive the new houses due to the availability of suitable land. This effort is part of a broader program that includes the improvement of existing houses in rural and urban areas of the entity.

In addition to the construction of new houses, a program for improving roofs, floors, and bathrooms is mentioned to enhance the quality of life for beneficiary families. A technical committee will be responsible for assessing the construction areas to ensure their viability and access to necessary public services.
